Literal illustration is what most people are thinking of when they hear the word 'illustration'. Much illustration is so interwoven with the written word that author and artist become combined in the reader's imagination.
"Appointment with Fear" (later "Fear on 4") was a horror drama series originally broadcast on BBC Radio in the 1940s and 1950s. Each episode was a dramatised horror story of approximately half an hour in length, introduced by a character known as "The Man In Black". The plays themselves were a mixture of classic horror stories by writers such as Edgar Allan Poe, M. R. James and W. W. Jacobs, and commissioned stories by new or established writers. This format reminds me of a podcast I listened to a year or two ago "The Magnus Archives" which follows the same format - and is clearly inspired by Appointment with Fear - but has an underlaying plot and story with reoccurring characters outside of the monster-of-the-week style episodes.
The brief for this project is to create a illustrations for "The Man In Black: Collected Stories" by The Folio Society.
- Full Page Illustration: full bleed image, CMYK, image size 160mm wide X 226mm high , 300 dpi. (This dimension includes a 3mm bleed around all four sides.)
- Vignette: black and white chapter heading that is aligned to the body of the justified text. 105mm wide X 50mm high, 300 dpi, grayscale image. (No requirement that it has to have a crisp, rectangular edge.)
- Front Cover and Spine: front cover (and spine) design. The cover will be printed with two spot colours on a cloth binding (specify the colours). The cover will be 165mm wide X 231mm high. The spine will be 30mm wide X 231mm high.

This doesn't look like Monet. Probably because I did it digitally instead of using the same mediums as him.
